Disability Unemployment and Employment Participation Statistics Released

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) the July 2009 disability unemployment rate was 15.1 percent compared to 9.5 percent for people with no disability. The percent of people with disabilities in the labor force was 23.0 percent compared to 71.8 percent for people with no disability.
Note: Data are not seasonally adjusted. Seasonally adjusted numbers are not yet available for disability specific statistics from BLS because the statistics are still too new.

U.S. Department of Labor Issues Paper on Workforce Development and Asset Building Coalitions
Creating a Roadmap out of Poverty for Americans with Disabilities: The Relationship of the Employment and Training Administration’s Workforce Development System and Local Asset-Building Coalitions
Results and recommendations from three “The Real Economic Impact Tour” cities, Detroit, Jacksonville, and Milwaukee, are included in the report. The “Tour” is a national campaign led by the Internal Revenue Service and the National Disability Institute encouraging people with disabilities to “think about a better economic future that begins with participation in the workforce.”
The Finance Project Publishes Guide on ARRA Funding and Asset Development
Making the Most of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009: A Guide for Asset-Building Leaders
The Finance Project’s new publication highlights 16 funding opportunities in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that are aligned with asset-building programs. This guide is intended to help program leaders and other stakeholders in the asset development field to strategically appraise these funding opportunities which fall into several key areas including entrepreneurship, housing and homeownership, capacity building, savings and banking services, and tax benefits. This latest publication is a companion to Finding Funding: A Guide to Federal Sources for Asset-Building Initiatives.
Disability.gov Launches New Website

The U.S. Department of Labor launched Disability.gov, a redesigned federal Web site that connects the more than 50 million Americans with disabilities to thousands of trusted resources on disability-related issues, programs and services. Formerly known as DisabilityInfo.gov, the site has been completely redesigned and updated with new social media tools, such as a blog and a Twitter feed, to encourage feedback and interaction among visitors. Disability.gov is not just for Americans with disabilities, but also for parents of children with disabilities, employers, workforce and human resource professionals, veterans, educators, caregivers and many others.
University of California, Davis Extension Releases Disabilities in the Workplace Case Series

Teaching cases, as they are prepared at business schools across the country, are one of the primary tools of management education. They are used globally in university settings, professional development and executive education training, and provide students and readers with a great wealth of insider knowledge about the "norms" of business practices. The University’s intention with this series is to demonstrate "best practices" in the employment of people with disabilities, a population which has historically had low employment rates.

PACER Center’s National Center for Bullying Prevention launched an innovative bullying prevention resource where teens can become a powerful part of the movement to end bullying. Teens themselves participated in the creative process of developing the site. Through videos, blogs, and social networking, the sites resounding message is the end of bullying begins with you.
